Why face data deserves special protection
Your face is the most personal piece of biometric data you have. Unlike a password, you cannot change it. Unlike an email address, it cannot be rotated. When a platform uses face recognition to match photos, it is handling data that requires the highest level of protection.
Many photo sharing platforms treat face data as an afterthought — storing it unencrypted, sharing it with advertising partners, or retaining it indefinitely. getPhoto was built differently. Privacy is not a feature we added later; it is a principle we started with.

Encrypted, never shared
All face data on getPhoto is encrypted at rest and in transit. The facial features extracted from photos are stored as mathematical representations — not as images of faces. These representations cannot be reverse-engineered back into a photograph.
We never share face data with third parties. Not with advertisers, not with data brokers, not with social media platforms. The face data exists for one purpose: to match a guest with their own photos. It is not used for any other purpose, and it is never sold or licensed.
Our servers run in secure data centres with access controls, audit logs and regular security reviews. The infrastructure is designed to meet enterprise-grade security standards, because we believe consumer photo sharing deserves the same protection as enterprise data.
Guests only see their own photos
When a guest takes a selfie and gets their matched photos, they see only the photos they appear in. They never see another guest's matched photos. They never see the full gallery. The privacy model is simple: your face, your photos.
This is fundamentally different from shared drive folders or WhatsApp groups, where every person sees every photo. At a corporate event, an employee does not need to see photos of a colleague from a different department. At a school event, a parent should not see photos of other people's children.
Photographers can choose between two modes: anonymous viewing, where anyone can browse the full gallery, or face-match-required viewing, where guests must take a selfie to see any photos. The second mode provides maximum privacy for sensitive events.
Deletable anytime
Guests can delete their face data at any time. When they do, their facial representation is permanently removed from the system. They can no longer find new photos via selfie, and their existing matches are cleared.
Photographers can also delete entire events and all associated face data. When an event is deleted, every face representation extracted from that event's photos is permanently removed. There is no soft delete, no hidden retention, no backup copy kept indefinitely.
For organisations subject to GDPR, CCPA or other data protection regulations, this deletion capability is essential. getPhoto provides the tools to comply with right-to-erasure requests without requiring engineering intervention.
